How Long Does SmartLipo Take?

It normally requires 30-45 minutes per treatment area. The average length of the SmartLipo procedure is 1.5-2 hours.

What Is SmartLipo?

SmartLipo is a form of laser liposuction. The SmartLipo device consists of a thin tube that holds a 1 mm laser fiber. The laser fiber produces laser energy that heats, melts, and coagulates targeted fat cells. The laser also seals the blood vessels to reduce pain, swelling, and bruising for patients.

Do I Need SmartLipo?

If you are close to your ideal weight but cannot get rid of excess fat deposits, SmartLipo can help. The procedure kills fat cells and can be a permanent solution.

Am I Ready for SmartLipo?

If you’re struggling with fat that you cannot lose no matter how much you diet or exercise and are prepared to explore other avenues in order to reach your goal, then you may be ready for SmartLipo. Keep in mind, you must be healthy overall and close to your ideal weight in order to obtain optimal results.

Who Is a SmartLipo Candidate?

Healthy people with excess fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise are the best candidates for SmartLipo. These men and women:

●  Are at least 18 years of age

●  Are within 25 pounds of their ideal body weight

●  Have reasonable expectations

People who are not ideal candidates for SmartLipo can consider a nonsurgical body sculpting procedure at SpaMedica instead.

Smartlipo is best suited for smaller zone liposuction when thermal energy and contraction is needed, whereas BodyTite lipo is more efficient, with more impressive contraction and is usually recommended for moderate to large areas.

Benefits of SmartLipo

SmartLipo is a good alternative to traditional liposuction. During your consultation, Dr. Mulholland will go over your expected outcome. He will also discuss the benefits in greater detail.

Removes Inches of Stubborn Fat
SmartLipo can be used to remove excess fat in the arms, legs, face, neck, abdomen, and buttocks. The results are visible within one week, although it takes up to six months to see the full results.

Better skin contraction
Better soft tissue contraction and control that traditional lipo, with less bruising and swelling.

Minimally Invasive
Surgeons make small incisions when performing the procedure, and the fat is removed with minimal force. The minimally invasive procedure has fewer complications than traditional liposuction, and the recovery time is shorter.

Long-Lasting Results
SmartLipo destroys fat cells. Patients who eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly can expect long-term results from SmartLipo. In fact, most patients only require a single treatment over the course of a lifetime.

Risks of SmartLipo

Serious complications are rare with this minimally invasive procedure. However, all surgical procedures have potential risks.

Bruising and Swelling
Minor bruising and swelling are common after a SmartLipo procedure. Compression garments reduce inflammation and help the treatment site heal. Bruising and swelling normally disappear within 3 weeks.

Mild Discomfort
Patients experience mild discomfort following the procedure. Resting after the procedure and slowly introducing activities reduce the discomfort, which normally subsides within 2 days.

Chance of a small burn and scar
The use of laser energy and thermal stimulation carries with it the small risk of a scar. The scar would be treated, at no charge to try to minimize or eliminate it.

Infections and Hematomas
There is a slight risk of infections or hematomas when undergoing SmartLipo. These complications are possible with any surgical procedure, even when the treatment is minimally invasive.

How is Smartlipo Performed by Dr. Mulholland or Dr. Tom Bell?

SmartLipo procedures are performed inside of SpaMedica’s surgery suites under the administration or direct care of Dr. Mulholland or Dr. Bell. Patients receive local anesthesia or oral sedation before the procedure. Then, the surgeon inserts the energy-assisted device directly into the treatment zone. The device heats, melts, and congeals the fat. The congealed fat is removed using a microcannula.

How to Prepare for a SmartLipo

Patients should prepare for SmartLipo beforehand to ensure they achieve optimal results. Preparations should begin 6 weeks before the procedure. Patients should:

●  Eat a healthy diet

●  Engage in regular exercise

●  Drink lots of water

●  Stop smoking

Additional preparations are required a week before the procedure. Patients must:

●  Stop taking supplements and medications that thin the blood

●  Go over all other medications with the surgeon

●  Arrange for a driver the day of the procedure

What to Expect After a SmartLipo

Slight discomfort, bruising, and swelling are normal immediately following the procedure. Some patients notice results after one week. Improvements continue for up to six months.

SmartLipo Recovery and Timeline

Many patients feel fully recovered the day after undergoing SmartLipo, although it can take up to six weeks for a full recovery. Since the recovery depends on the size of the zone and the amount of fat removed, aftercare is customized for each patient.

The day after the procedure, many patients are ready to resume light and sedentary activities and can return to work the following day.

One to two weeks later, most patients are released to engage in low-impact activities. This includes walking.

After four to six weeks, patients can resume high-impact activities. Most patients do not have any restrictions at this time. Patients wear compression garments for a minimum of 22 hours a day for the first 3 weeks following the procedure. The garments apply even pressure to the treatment areas and reduce swelling.   After 3 weeks, patients only need to wear the garments during the day until the treatment site is completely healed.

Best Procedures Paired with SmartLipo

SmartLipo is often combined with a breast augmentation, tummy tuck and/or fat grafting to the buttock or breast. Non-surgical treatments include laser hair removal, cellulite reduction and stretch mark treatments.

SmartLipo FAQ

Patients from around the world have travelled to Toronto to undergo SmartLipo with Dr. Mulholland. Many patients have questions before undergoing the procedure. These are the answers to the most frequently asked questions.

How Painful Is It to Get SmartLipo?

Patients might experience a tingling sensation during the procedure, but it is not painful. Mild discomfort is common following the procedure, but it normally goes away within 1-2 days.

How Many Treatments Are Required?

Most patients only require a single SmartLipo treatment. Dr. Mulholland can treat multiple areas during the same appointment.

How Long Will the Results Last?

Since SmartLipo kills fat cells, the results can last forever. To enjoy long-lasting results, patients should follow healthy diets

What Are the Differences Between Smartlipo, Bodytite Lipo and Vaser Lipo and What Would Be Used on Me?

SmartLipo releases laser energy and heat in the fat and has no integrated external temperature control, where as BodyTite liquified fat, tightens skin and has integrated external and internal thermal control and tightens skin more effectively.  SmartLipo can be used for small zone lipo with moderate to good skin tone, whereas BodyTite lipo is much more effective at soft tissue contraction and is used for moderate to large zones with noticeable skin laxity.

SmartLipo, BodyTite Lipo and Vaser Lipo (which releases ultrasound energy into the fat)

All have the advantages of less bruising and swelling after surgeon, compared to traditional lipo, but while Vaser does not have the best tissue contraction, the fat cells are still alive and can be transplanted to the buttock, breast of face, which they cannot be with SmartLipo or BodyTite llpo.

Quite often your SpaMedica Surgeon might use 3-4 different liposuction technologies, to get the best results.

How Is the Fat Actually Removed?

After the procedure, a small suction cannula is used to gently aspirate out the soft, emulsified liquified fat. This cannula can be power assisted (PAL, microaire) or mechanical.
